LONG VERSION:
If you are reading the reviews for this product, it's because you probably have ice dam forming on your roof.
I'm sorry to hear that because trust me I know that feeling.
There's nothing worse that hearing and seeing water drips from your ceiling in your kitchen, living room, dining room, or bedroom.
I didn't even know what ice dam was until my first experience with water dripping from dining room ceiling few years ago. I immediately went out to check the roof and noticed that my gutters and immediately above the gutters were frozen with ice blocks. Without knowing what ice dam was at that time, I went up the ladder and started chiseling the ice blocks with hammer. I did this as a panic reaction to the water dripping inside my house and it did solve my problem at that time but I didn't know that this can actually damage my roof shingles and make it worse in the long run.
The following year, it happened again so I did the same thing by chiseling the ice blocks on the roof. However, I wondered why this problem doesn't always happen after every snow falls and wanted to understand what causes this so I started googling around and that's when I learned about the ice dam. Bottom line is that I have bad insulation above my ceiling and my attic is getting too warm to melt the snow above the roof but the overhanging roof section and the gutters are below the freezing point so all the snow melt from the top of the roof is freezing at the bottom of the roof, hence creating ice dam, which you probably learned by now if you are looking into this product.
I don't have the budget to fix the insulation problem in my attic so I tried to address this problem some other way.
I tried Roof Melt Tablets but to make the long story short, it was a waste of time and money (let me know if you want to know why). I also purchased Telescoping Snow Shovel Roof Rake because I thought removing the heavy snow on top of roof might solve the problem but this really doesn't eliminate the problem unless you can rake all the snow off the roof. I could not reach the very top section of the roof with the rake so eventually the snow on the top of the roof melt and flowed down the roof to freeze at the bottom section. Also, raking down heavy snow on the roof with 20 feet long pole is much difficult than it sounds.
Ultimately, I bought this electric roof cable and it solved the problem. This is what I should have done in the first place but sometimes you have to learn the hard way. The instruction that comes with the product is very clear on the best way to install this on your roof so just follow the instruction and make sure the cables are not touching each other by using the clips that it comes with, and also make sure to have the cable run inside your gutter so that there's no ice dam forming in your gutter as that can sag your gutter and cause other water draining problems.
If you have a switch inside your house that can control the outlet outside, I would recommend that you get a pilot switch so that you don't forget to turn off the electric roof cable.
** TIP **
I don't always turn on the electric roof cable whenever it snows. Instead, I check the weather forecast to see what the temperature will be for next couple of days after the snow fall. If the temperature is warm and sunny then I choose not to turn on the electric cable since ice dam can't be formed if it's not below freezing temperature.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommend this electric roof cable if you have ice dam problem on your roof.
I hope this will solve your problem as it did for me. Let me know if this has been of any help and feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I know it sucks to have ice dam forming in your roof but hopefully electric roof cable will solve your problem as it did for me. Good luck!
** TIP **
If you don't have a wall switch inside your house for turning on/off the outdoor outlets, you should seriously consider purchasing outdoor smart plug so you can turn it on, off, and even schedule from your smartphone!
